Panmycin (Tetracycline)

Drug Uses

Panmycin is an antibiotic used to treat infections with bacteria, mycoplasma, rickettsia (e.g., Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever), spirochetes (e.g., leptospirosis), and Chlamydophila (e.g., psittacosis).

How Taken

  • Dogs: The usual dose of tetracycline in dogs is 10 mg/pound every 8 hours.
  • Cats: The usual dose of tetracycline in cats is 9 mg/pound every 8 to 12 hours.
Allow plenty of water for the pet to drink. Panmycin is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as Lyme disease, Chlamydia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and others. Panmycin may be used for purposes other than those listed in this guide.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Panmycin inhibits bacteria from forming necessary proteins, resulting in death and reduced growth of the bacteria. This allows normal white blood cells to kill the remaining bacteria.

Missed Dose

If you miss to give a dose of Panmycin, give it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your pet to take the next dose, skip the dose and go back to the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store Panmycin between 39 and 86 degrees F (4 and 30 degrees C). Keep Panmycin out of the reach of children and away from pets.

Warnings/Preautions

  • Do not give Panmycin to a pregnant animal as it could cause harm to the offspring.
  • Panmycin should not be given to nursing animals since this medication may cause slowing of bone growth and discoloration of teeth.
  • Panmycin may make the pet's skin more sensitive to sunlight and cause sunburn.
  • Do not take any Panmycin after the expiration date printed on the bottle.

Possible Side Effects

  • If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving Panmycin and seek emergency veterinary medical attention; an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat); severe headache, dizziness, or blurred vision; fever; hair loss; vesicles around mouth, ears, and groin; urinating less than normal or not at all; dark colored urine, confusion or weakness; loss of appetite; jaundice.
  • Continue giving Panmycin and talk to your veterinarian if any of these less serious side effects occur; mild nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Side effects other than those listed in this guide may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that is unusual or seems especially bothersome to your pet.
